As a former Irish National Cycling Team mechanic, over the years I have given many bike maintenance demonstrations to groups of cyclists both large and small. Usually people pick up a few tips and hints but it has primarily been with 1-2-1 individual classes that real progress has been made.
I have taken great satisfaction in enabling cyclists of all abilities, both male and female, to carry out all of the basic safety checks and repairs, up to being capable of carrying out a service on their own bikes within two hours of one to one intensive training whilst actually working on their own bikes.
I am now offering a limited amount of these 1-2-1 classes for any cyclist who would like to learn how to :
Wash their bike easily and quickly
Carry out a professional safety check on their bike
Change a tube correctly, and what pitfalls to look out for
Adjust their brakes to work with 100% effectiveness
Adjust their gears to eliminate jumping chains
How to fit a new chain, the easy way
How to change inner brake and gear cables
How to give your bike a basic service
At the end of each class YOU will have serviced your own bike
The cost for these classes, which are available Nationwide is just :
(Additional charge to cover travelling expense for classes outside Clonmel)
A professional bike fitting session is also available along with each class for the discounted price of an extra €50
What People are Saying about the classes :
I recently did the 1-2-1 bike maintenance course with Barry. From the initial contact I found him exceptionally professional. He was both efficient and accommodating when arranging a time for the class. Barry visited my house to deliver the course. He covered a variety of topics from washing the bike to servicing it. His attention to detail and teaching style were top class. Most importantly for me everything was done at a pace I was comfortable with. I never felt rushed and as a result of Barry’s patience I felt I maximised my learning. There is no doubt that doing this course will allow me to save money in the future as I now feel confident doing many tasks that I would have had to have done at a bike shop. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the 1-2-1 bike maintenance course with Barry and consider it some of the best money I have spent on my bike.
‘Did a 3 hour one to one bike maintenance course yesterday with Barry Meehan from thecyclingblog.com. Best money I have spent in years. Learned so much stuff about my bike. I now know how to service and fix my own bike, fix gears, brakes, change cassette and chains. Properly fix punctures quickly, wash my bike properly, do a proper m safety check, change break and gear cables, fit a new chain easily and give my bike a proper service. I now know how to check for chain and Cassette wear, and spot for possible future problem areas by knowing what to look for as regards wear and tear. And I got a proper bike fit. That’s what I did on Saturday. Anyone who rides a bike on a regular basis should learn how to fix it. It will save you so much time and money. Look after your bike and it will look after you.’ – Colin via Facebook
I can highly recommend this course. Barry is very knowledgable and does not overload you with knowledge that only a mechanic in the Tour of France would need, he keeps it simple and teaches you in a way that is both easy to understand and enjoyable. Bike is sliky smooth now and with some practice at home I will soon be repairing punctures like a pro. – Tom via the blog
I completed the Basic Mechanics course with Barry this week and I have to admit that it was well worth it. I would advise anyone who has purchased a bike to do this course. I thought I was looking after the bicycle by washing it after every cycle but I was only washing the bicycle by name. I would recommend a 1-2-1 approach with Barry. Well worth it… thanks – Nicky via Facebook
