1987 – When Roche made history

One of the most iconic days in Irish Cycling history was the second last day of the 1987 Tour de France. Stephen Roche was about to ride himself into the coveted yellow jersey by that evening. With just the ceremonial spin into Paris the following day he would be all but guaranteed to become the only Irish winner of the Tour de France.

Dave Allen from Wexford, a man very well known by cyclists far and wide, who managed to bring the Worlds best cyclists to Wexford when Kelly and Roche were at their peak, was in France to witness history being made. Here he chronicles his adventures for a national newspaper ;
