2010 Sean Kelly Tour

Today I was impressed by many people at The Sean Kelly Tour .

The huge team of over 300 volunteers who gave up their Sunday to help out , and many gave a good deal more time than that .

The 3700 determined cyclists who were all so cheerful and friendly to each other and to the volunteers .

The Waterford County Council , Sports Partnership , Community forum and the local cycling clubs who all worked tirelessly to make it all come together .

But mostly with Sean Kelly himself who has a big hand in organising the event, and was there on Saturday evening signing autographs and having his photo taken for hours with all of the 1100 participants in the family 10k cycle .

Today he was at the sports centre from 7.00 am meeting everyone and managed to be cycling out at the start line of the 8.30 160k event and at 9.30 for the 90k event and at 10.30 for the 50k event giving all 3700 of today’s cyclists the chance to say that they did indeed cycle with Sean Kelly .

He then made his way to the Tramore and Rathgormack food stops before heading in to the finish where he waited until the final participant came home safely just after 6 pm .

He stood for countless photos , signed countless autographs and had a word for everyone .

Where else in the sporting world can any member of the public participate alongside their hero and get to meet them in person .

The Sean Kelly Tour is not just another cycling event , it’s Sean Kelly’s Tour !

Thanks for stopping and getting me back on the road my gear shifter broke. I was thinking about going home but managed to get around on the small cog – turns out you don’t need the big cog much in Sean Kelly country!!
    Fair play.
