Bike pure – a quiet revolution .

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGbwrJDIKbM]As I opened the Sunday papers yesterday I was confronted with images of anti war protesters being arrested for violent conduct . This seems like a contradiction in terms to me . If a person feels passionate about their opposition to war , which is violence on a grand scale , why would they resort to small scale violence ?

Mother Theresa was once asked to attend an anti war protest which she refused to do but said that she would be more than willing to attend a Pro peace rally . Whilst their seems to be a common goal , the mindset is totally different .

Cycling has a problem with doping and there are a large amount of anti doping campaigners who want to eliminate drugs in the sport . Most have good intentions but some seem to have personal vendettas against certain riders or cycling officials .

The anti doping tests that are carried out may also have an inherent flaw . The deterrent aspect is good but cyclists by their nature are competitive . The drug tests are seen by some as just another opponent to be beaten . Some riders live in a bubble where success and winning is all that matters . They do not spend much time thinking about whether they may be cheating or not .

This is where an organisation like Bike pure comes in . A movement which focuses on cyclists who choose to compete with integrity and honesty . There is no pressure on a rider to join but the number of pros who do is growing all the time . The blue headset spacer or wristband are subtle ways for a rider to show his family , supporters and sponsors that he has chosen to ride clean . It also gives amateur cyclists and fans a chance to show their support for a clean sport .

To see the amount of underage and junior riders who now have the blue headset spacer on their bikes gives great hope for the future of the sport . In years to come Bike pure may be seen as one of the main factors to have cleaned up the sport of cycling !

I’ve been following Bikepure for while now and am constantly blown away by the achievements of Andy and Myles. Bike pure is massive but I cant help wondering what the end goal is? Do they have any ‘clout’ in changing the drug culture within cycling or is it simply a feel good, look at me factor on offer for clean cyclists.

I hope Bikepure can make a difference and would encourage Andy and Myles to keep up the great work but until the UCI play ball will anything change?

      Andy ,

I do think that Bike pure are making a difference by going down a different avenue to the governing body . Perhaps they have more independence this way .

      Mick ,

We should have bands and spacers back in the shop for the weekend . See you then !
