Carrauntoohiling

On a cold and frosty December morning

I looked across at the mountain calling

A goal was set

A challenge was met

I was going Carrauntoohiling !

There is a new phenomenon currently taking hold within the cycling World. People choose a climb and ride up and down until they amass a cumulative total of meters climbed equivalent to the height of Mount Everest. It is called ‘Everesting’

Last evening I was writing out a few goals for 2015. Near the top of the list is to ‘Everest’ a climb.

It was one of those things that captured my imagination. Many dream of climbing to the summit of Mount Everest but now us cyclists have the opportunity to set ourselves the challenge of climbing the equivalent of the Worlds highest mountain from anywhere in the World.

As anyone who may have read THE CLIMB will realise there is one particular climb that I would like to ‘Everest’.

Then, this morning a thought entered my head, Everest may be the highest mountain in the World but Carrauntoohil is the highest mountain in Ireland. Whilst climbing the height of Everest in a single day may be out of reach for some cyclists, the challenge of climbing the 1038m height of Irelands highest mountain is very doable for most.

So this morning I set off to ‘Carrauntoohil’ Tickincor and here is how I got on :

Getting to the top the first time was OK

The second time to the top was a bit tougher

Final time at the top and I didn't have the energy to be tooling around trying to balance the bike on a stone

Everest is 8848m so that means I will have to climb Tickincor over 20 times to Everest it. Roll on 2015 !

Fair play, as I climbed it last Sunday I wondered how some kind of Everest could be done on powers the pot. I wondered about committing to 52 ascents during the course of 2015. Seems a bit tame, maybe 365 ascents?

52 times would definitely be possible Liam but 365, that would be a real challenge.

Barry, I was actually scared watching the you descend there! That takes skill and nerve….

It is a lot less scary when you are on the bike though Vinnie 🙂
