Sean : Stupid mistake ! …… On previous days there was always a headwind in the finish straight which made the 13 the correct gear for the sprint. That morning it was still a headwind, but there was a huge thunderstorm towards the end of the race and the wind direction changed.
Then Fignon attacked from about 500m out, so it made for a very fast sprint. LeMond was super strong in the finish, so it was only a half stupid mistake.
(This video shows what happened and I still feel the emotion welling up inside as, even though I know the result, I shout at the screen willing Sean on to get around LeMond – Barry)
